What is an ISHTA Yoga Class?

An ISHTA yoga class blends vinyasa flow with precise alignment from the inside-out, as well as the outside-in. Our classes include asana, pranayama (breath work) and meditation techniques that honor the Tantric tradition of meeting your edge when fully immersed in the present moment. Our expert teachers bring you to this edge with mindfulness. You will leave the yoga studio feeling regenerated and rebalanced.

The ISHTA practice resonates with the individual spirit, as do our teachers. Some yoga classes are accompanied by music, while others are in silence.  Some are physically rigorous, while others are gentle or meditative.  Some classes incorporate philosophical concepts, while others include less. There is something for everyone at ISHTA Yoga.  Ultimately, we empower our students to become their own teacher by tuning into their breath and intuition. We provide local yoga classes at our studio in New York City, as well as private lessons, corporate yoga and events.

Our Yoga Experience
All of our teachers have studied directly with renowned Yogiraj, Alan Finger, and have completed the 500 hour ISHTA Yoga Teacher Training program. The information you learn comes from a strong and ancient lineage, but is also adapted to practical, modern day living.  Our primary interest is teaching you to find calm and comfort in your own life. In order to do this, we make a point of getting to know you. Whether you want to be stronger or more flexible, feel more energetic or relaxed, or are recovering from an injury or ailment, we aspire to help you achieve your goals. We work from the belief that yoga is a powerful tool that can truly enhance the mind, body and spirit.

Your Yoga Experience
We welcome students of all levels. Beginners can start in ISHTA Basics while advanced students, teachers, and trainees can jump right in to our Intermediate/Advanced classes, Core Flow, or Open yoga classes. If you are unsure about your level, please consult one of our Reception Managers at the desk, or Studio Manager Raquel Rodriguez.

We look forward to seeing you at the studio and getting to know you. It is always exciting to grow the ISHTA family and take students along with us on this wonderful adventure into the world of yoga!

Testimonial:

Dear Julie - and of course everyone else -

Thank you.

I came to New York City in early April for a month, and, as well as the writing and research I had planned, I wanted to find local yoga classes. I had recently had two difficult operations - a second operation on an old performance injury on my foot, and an operation for a deep nodal melanoma that had weakened my arm and shoulder. I had done nothing more than 15 minutes of yoga stretching and breathing a day, at home, for months. I found you when walking to meet a friend, and signed up that day - and came the next day, and the next and the next, until I left. My last day was your Open House. I came in all - in less than 3 weeks - 16 times. I came to many different classes, including meditation, and at many different times of day. Every class, every single experience of walking through the door was brilliant - and this, for me, is what makes ISHTA so good.

ISHTA has an expanded idea of what yoga is. It is a kind of wide angle view that includes the corners of each room and the experience of walking to the desk. It includes the quiet discipline of opening and closing each class; it includes the presence in the room of trainees, some of whom at times are merely discrete witnesses, who are nevertheless always bringing energy and attention to the class.

ISHTA has both lightness and humor - I think of Alan here - which never undermines the seriousness of the work - it just puts in in a different light. The matter in hand is never a burden - it is lightly carried. The teaching is first class - every teacher explains, shows, demonstrates clearly, carefully, fully. Every teacher has a different personality - which he or she uses, but not in an intrusive way.The teaching is broad enough to benefit everyone. The teaching is really, really, non judgmental.
The teaching is about a widened sense of pleasure - understanding how to take pleasure in the process of the work that is done, as well as in understanding and achieving new things.

It is a very, very, very good center - and it has wonderful clothes - I am wearing my new pants as I sit at my writing desk.

I will be back - in the summer for a few classes and possibly for longer (possibly to do the training? Valuable whatever one's future path).

It's such a truism to say I can't thank you enough, but I can't. I have muscle in my shoulder, I learned new things, I feel enormously uplifted by the work I did at ISHTA, I am full of admiration for the centre.

Greetings to all, thanks to all, I hope to see you all again.

Very best wishes,

Claire McDonald
