February 14: Sarah Platt-Finger, How to Teach a Private

(Registration Closed)

This workshop will be geared towards yoga teachers and will explore the fundamentals of how to teach and maintain private students. Teaching privates can be rewarding on many levels, and is a great way to sustain a living as a yoga teacher.

In this session, Sarah will go over the following aspects of teaching privates:
• Getting to know your students on a one-on-one basis
• Teaching to the individual from a physical and energetic perspective
• Sequencing for a private
• Maintaining a clientele

We will also spend some time talking about the financial elements that relate to having your own private practice.

Bio:  Sarah Platt-Finger was introduced to yoga while living in Taiwan as a dancer, choreographer, and English teacher. She has been teaching privates and group classes in the New York City area for over 6 years and is the Director of Teacher Training and co-founder of ISHTA Yoga. Sarah teaches an intelligent flow class that caters to the wisdom of the breath and inspires the reconnection of the individual to the true Self.

March 12: Kristin Leal, Mantra & Chanting in the Classroom

(Registration Closed)

"The knower of the mystery of sound knows the mystery of the whole universe"

Hazrat Inayet Khan (Sufi Mystic)

Mantra comes from two root words: Manas (Mind) and Trayati (Liberation)

In this workshop we will explore various techniques of using mantra, chanting and kirtan in our practice to help bring about a liberation of both body, breath and mind. This practice will incorporate lecture, chanting in asana, kirtan, bija mantra meditation and more!

Bio: Kristin Leal is a senior ISHTA teacher and a teacher trainer in several programs around the world. Her love of mantra and chanting began over 15 years ago at Jivamukti Yoga. She could often be found singing loud and slightly off key (but with passion) at kirtansaround the city. Amazed at the power of sound she later studied mantra and chanting from many different lineages and also brings a scientific curiosity to understanding the potential of this practice.

April 10: Wendy Newton, The Teaching Relationship: Satvic Communication Skills for Yoga Teachers

(Registration Closed)

As yoga teachers we have learned that underneath the surface of life, everything is made of energy governed by the principles of rajas, tamas, and satvas. But it can be difficult to translate this understanding into our everyday relationships and especially into our work with students and clients. This workshop will explore how to apply that esoteric knowledge in a practical and accessible way to the teaching relationship. A short review of the gunas and the koshas will set the stage for a series of experiential exercises and discussion. Participants will gain a new perspective on effectively listening to and interacting with students both privately and in group classes,

Concepts introduced will include:
• Evaluating and working with the energy of a class or private client
• Holding a safe and satvic teaching environment
• Creating rapport with students
• Practicing reflective listening and non-verbal pacing

Come prepared to experiment, deepen your experience of teaching, and have fun!

Bio: Wendy is a senior teacher at ISHTA Yoga and a lead trainer in the ISHTA teacher training program.  She is also certified in Polarity Therapy, a form of energy work based on the ancient understandings of samkhya philosophy and ayurveda.  Her practice and her teaching explore the sacred within the mundane and inspire students to gain experiential understanding of the subtle energetic principles at the heart of the practice of yoga.

May 8: John Campbell, Sutra Studies

Based on the traditional pedagogy of Classical Yoga and set within a modern study environment, the workshop is a unique interdisciplinary synthesis of ancient and modern where the transformative experience of yoga is grounded in a rigorous examination of the yogic knowledge system in order to develop advanced literacy in both the "Inner" and "Outer" sciences of yoga.

The workshop is structured according to the traditional practice of Kriya Yoga as described in the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali: tapas svadhyaya isvarapranidhanani kriya yogah [YS ii.1] "The Yoga of Action consists of three things…."

1. Tapas — ‘Practice and Teaching’

2. Svadhyaya — ‘Sacred Study of Lineage'

3. Isvara Pranidhana — ‘Anthropology of Enlightenment’

Bio: John Campbell started practicing Ashtanga Yoga in India eighteen years ago with the late Shri K. Pattabhi Jois. He began teaching in 1995 with Eddie Stern at the first center in New York City devoted to this traditional practice, and in 2003 became one the few Certified teachers of Ashtanga Yoga worldwide. While a graduate student in Sanskrit and Tibetan Studies, he began practicing Tibetan Buddhism, studying with HH the Dalai Lama and Denma Lochoe Rinpoche. In 2009, he was granted his Ph.D. from Columbia University in the Indian and Tibetan Buddhist Tantras. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Seton Hall University in New Jersey and runs daily classes in Ashtanga Yoga at Pure Yoga West in New York City.
