and practice. The philosophy of ISHTA focuses on the individual's constitution. The teachers are incredibly well trained and humble, often time sharing their current experience as students of yoga with their classes. Classes range from gentle and restorative to active and challenging, what I appreciate most is that ISHTA teaches different postures and sequences with changing seasons and times of day. The teachers and philosophy acknowledge that life is constantly changing and shifting and this is reflected in the diversity of classes- appropriately so. Most importantly ISHTA will help you to recognize your own potential, physically, mentally, or otherwise and it will force you to remember to breathe. There is nothing mystical about the ... Ishta yoga is not just about physical health, nor is it about getting blissed out and acting holy. ISHTA stands for Integrated Science of Hatha, Tantra, and Ayurveda, and the combination of these things is present in every class with a very down to earth attitude. This brings, in my eyes, a more complete view of a person and yoga as an ancient tradition. Teachers ask you to be in tune with your needs, whether it is time to respect your limitations or push beyond your boundaries, and they bring a sense of larger purpose, pulling you out of your tiny mind bubble thought patterns. Competitiveness is discouraged and respect is encouraged. Knowledge is all around. What a naturally great studio to learn and grow in!

During our teacher training program my teacher had peppered her insights with what she was learning and going through as a student from her teacher. At first I was surprised she had a teacher, I just assumed that she didn't need a teacher, at least not one in the way she was a teacher to us. But then, I became incredibly curious. I mean she was already so much more knowledgeable and enlightened than we were, how much MORE was her teacher? I imagined a yoda-like figure who's very look could enlighten you. It turns out he's not a fictional character and actually opened up a studio near Union Square, Ishta Yoga. And now my teacher had a class there and invited us to come. I could barely wait. I wanted to go first and foremost to support KL, her teachings have developed my practice in unbelievable ways, and going to support her was the least I could do. But I also wanted to see where SHE practices, and did it resemble Narnia? It was close. The studio was new, and still had a luminous ... Show full review
I have been practicing yoga for well over 15 years and am delighted to have found Ishta Yoga. My practice, knowledge of my body and mind have deepened and improved and I am consistently met with smiles and encouragement by every one of the knowledgeable and friendly staff. My frequent visits to the various classes at Ishta are regular and important parts of my week. I have been a monthly member for 5 months and intend to continue.
i am in my 50's and have serious knee issues. All of the teachers have taken this into account in a personal attentive way--however, i don't feel embarrassed or singled out. if feel that the teachers here "walk the walk" not just "talk the talk." i also instinctively trust any cosmology that encorages one to develop a community and a daily home practice. It's a light touch with multiple points of view and authentic depth under the surface. i love this place.
ishta is my favorite style of yoga by a landslide. this studio has a great variety of teachers, so you are bound to find someone that suits your own personal style. they span the gamut from slow and gentle to upbeat and sweaty, but all of it is safe and the teachers keep an eye on everyone. some use music, some don't. some chant, some don't. Douglass' class feels like dancing, and he has amazing, visceral alignment cues... jean has incredible sequencing and a lighthearted attitude... wendy has a compassionate, very beginner friendly intro to yogaand al's meditation classes are really something that must be experienced. my favorite is to go to al's meditation on monday or wednesday evenings, then stay for sarah's intermediate class directly afterwards. love it here.
i have been practicing yoga for over 10 years and tried my fair share of studios. ISHTA yoga is a true gem! the quality of teaching is consistently top and there is also the profound spiritual aspect that is so often lost in other studios/gyms these days. the space provides a wonderful, warm, nourishing, safe, noncompetitive atmosphere. the space is lovely and clean, i can only highly recommend isht
